Boulder

Boulder County

Boulder homes tend toward cedar — older craftsman bungalows in Mapleton Hill and Whittier, large deck builds in South Boulder, privacy fences throughout Table Mesa. At 5,430 feet, UV intensity is significantly higher than at sea level, and most cedar fences here need attention every 3–5 years to stay ahead of greying and grain checking.

Longmont

Boulder County

Longmont has a large stock of 1970s–1990s ranch homes across neighborhoods like Sunset and northwest Longmont, many with cedar privacy fences at or past their retreatment window. The city is also growing fast — new construction in east Longmont brings fresh pressure-treated fencing that needs proper drying time before the first stain application.

Louisville

Boulder County

Louisville's older neighborhoods — particularly near Downtown and Coal Creek — have a mix of craftsman bungalows with aging cedar fences and newer homes backing onto trails with decks built for the mountain views. The city's compact character means fences are visible from the street, and the condition is obvious when one is overdue.

Lafayette

Boulder County

Lafayette is a mix of 1980s ranch homes in established neighborhoods like Waneka and Centaurus, and newer subdivisions along US-287. The older cedar fences in established areas often need more prep — grey oxidation and mildew from years of irrigation spray takes extra cleaning before stain can penetrate properly.

Erie

Weld / Boulder County

Erie has grown faster than almost any Colorado city over the last decade, which means a large share of its fencing is relatively new — pressure-treated or cedar installed in the last five years. New wood needs to reach the right moisture level before staining. A lot of Erie homeowners stain too early and end up with peeling finishes within the first season.

Superior

Boulder County

Superior lost a significant portion of its housing stock in the Marshall Fire of December 2021. Many rebuilt homes — particularly in Rock Creek Ranch — have new cedar or pressure-treated fencing installed in 2022 and 2023 that is either approaching its first stain window or slightly overdue. Fresh cedar from those rebuilds is worth protecting well from the start.

Niwot

Boulder County

Niwot is a small, established community with residential properties on standard lots and larger rural parcels with acreage. Both have wood fencing — cedar privacy for the residential lots and split-rail or board-on-board on the larger rural properties. Many of the older fence lines here have been stained once or twice and are showing their age at the rails and post bases.

Lyons

Boulder County

Lyons sits at the junction of the North and South St. Vrain Creeks at about 5,400 feet — a mountain-gateway community where UV exposure, high winds, and creek-corridor humidity combine to age wood faster than the flatlands below. Most wood here needs attention every 3–4 years rather than the 4–5 you might get at a less exposed location.

Berthoud

Larimer County

Berthoud is a small town growing fast. Older neighborhoods near downtown have established cedar fencing well past its retreatment window, while new subdivisions on the north and east are putting in fresh PT and cedar that needs time to dry before the first stain. Some rural properties around Berthoud have older fence lines that have never been treated at all.

Firestone

Weld County

Firestone has seen rapid residential growth since the early 2000s, which means most of its fencing is 5–20 years old — past the first retreatment window for many properties and already showing greying and moisture damage in others. Weld County's wind is harder on wood than people expect.

Frederick

Weld County

Frederick and Firestone share a border and similar residential patterns — fast growth, newer subdivisions, and a core of older homes near historic downtown Frederick. The older streets around Miners Park have cedar and pine fencing that has been there for decades and often needs significant prep before product will bond properly.

Loveland

Larimer County

Loveland is a large city with a wide range of property types — older established neighborhoods near downtown with mature cedar fencing, mid-century ranch homes in the southwest with weathered decks, and newer Centerra and Kinston developments with fresh PT installations. The foothills location brings more UV exposure and larger temperature swings than the southern Front Range.

Broomfield

Broomfield County

Broomfield is one of the densest communities on the Front Range, which means a large volume of wood privacy fencing — neighbors close together, HOAs common, and fence condition visible to everyone. The housing stock runs from 1970s ranch homes in the older northeast to newer developments around Interlocken and Anthem Ranch, most with cedar or pine fencing that cycles through retreatment every few years.
